Barnsley Aphasia Technology Club Shortlisted for Excellence Award!

Speak With IT staff, clients and volunteers will be donning smart evening wear on Tuesday 19th November because the charity in partnership with Barnsley Speech & Language Therapy team have been shortlisted for an Excellence Award 2019 by South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SWYFT)

The Barnsley Aphasia Technology Club was an Awards for All funded project which ran between January and August 2019. Based at Barnsley Metrodome the project aimed to help people with aphasia understand the benefits of using a device such as an iPad to assist with their communication goals. The sessions were devised and led by Emilie Verroken, Clinical Lead Speech & Language Therapist at SWYFT. There were 12 sessions in total which ran fortnightly where five people with aphasia were supported by SWIT volunteers (Neil Whittaker, Sarah Guifo Guifo, Louisa Leyland and Anne Little) and SWIT staff, Hattie Foreman, Volunteer Coordinator and James Major, Charity Manager. The people with aphasia learned about a range of topics which support communication, for example, how to download an app and how to access text to speech and voice dictation functionality on an iPad.  With volunteer support the group spent time working on individualised communication goals such as word finding, reading and speaking in sentences using a variety of computer therapy apps.

Feedback from participants has been fantastic and outcomes from the group have far exceeded expectations. An outcome questionnaire was used to track participants progress throughout the duration of the project and all people with aphasia taking part saw improvements, some by as much as 37%! Overall participants recorded a 22% improvement in outcomes with improvements seen in areas such as using other ways to help you communicate, ability to use the controls (settings) on an iPad, ability to send emails, ability to read and how the person felt about their communication now. Three participants are continuing to receive one to one home based support from Speak With IT. Well done to the team and fingers crossed for the big day!
