Do you have Aphasia?
Aphasia is a language disorder which affects a person’s ability to speak, read, write and understand. It can be as a result of stroke or head injury and can have a devastating impact on a person’s life. An estimated 400,000 people living in the UK have a diagnosis of aphasia.
Speak With IT was established in 2011 by people with aphasia and their carers. They felt that relevant help and support was markedly thin on the ground when their NHS treatment ended. Technology and speech therapy programs were instrumental in their recoveries; this led them to launch Speak With IT, so that more people with aphasia were offered the dedicated and consistent support needed.
People with aphasia can often feel desperate and frustrated in their struggle to be understood, with self-esteem and confidence diminishing as a result. Some people with aphasia withdraw from the world altogether, and completely avoid opportunities to interact with others.
There are no discharge dates with Speak With IT. We will provide support through our home based one to one support, our aphasia cafes and Technology clubs for as long as our support is required. Guided by speech and language therapists and supported by volunteer speech support workers we aim to make a positive impact on a person with aphasia’s wellbeing and everyday life.
