Become a Volunteer

Speak With IT are recruiting for Volunteer Speech Support Workers across Yorkshire who can provide valuable one to one support for people with aphasia.

This volunteer role is perfect for someone with an interest in speech and language therapy or the wider healthcare sector and/or someone who wants to give back to their community.

Our volunteers support people with aphasia in their own home with visits organised around your availability and the people you are supporting. We also have volunteer opportunities in our Aphasia Cafes which are run in various community venues across Yorkshire and our Group Aphasia Technology Clubs.

With kindness and compassion our Volunteer Speech Support Workers support individuals dealing with communication problems caused by Aphasia and help them to work on communication goals and to build their confidence.

What are we looking for?

Volunteers must be IT literate, friendly, positive and patient. A self starter who is able to work independently. This opportunity would particularly benefit students who are keen to develop a career in speech and language therapy or the wider healthcare sector; or people who have recently retired and would like to give back to their community.

Availability must be during the day due to the nature of the physical condition the people we help are living with. Owning your own transport is definitely an advantage but not mandatory. All our volunteers are subject to Enhanced DBS checks and we request two references.

What training do we offer?

You will attend a full day induction and will then be invited to training sessions focused on the computer therapy programs we support. There will be additional training opportunities around supported conversation and using accessibility features on devices such as iPads, for example the text to speech feature and voice dictation. Visit practice and shadowing of other volunteers and/or staff is available and your first appointment will always be accompanied by a staff member. A volunteer handbook and software guidelines are provided.

Practical Considerations

We request a minimum of 12 month’s commitment and a commitment to help a minimum of two clients (preferably more) within your geographical location. The amount of time required to support one client is generally 1.5 hour plus travel time per month, although visits can be more or less frequent than this. We also require a brief written report which is sent to us after each visit. Visits take place at the client’s home address and our group Aphasia Cafes and Technology Clubs are run in community venues. The volunteering opportunity is flexible and is based around your availability. All travel and out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed.
